Toyota's Rumion, based on the Ertiga, has been launched in South Africa

After considerable anticipation, Toyota's version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga-based MPV has been launched in South Africa. The new Toyota Rumion looks nearly comparable to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga marketed in India and other areas such as Indonesia.

Ertiga a-based Rumion is now available in South Africa.

• Gets the same 1.5-litre petrol engine as the Ertiga • Becomes the third Suzuki vehicle to be offered as a Toyota

What is the Toyota Rumion, exactly?

Toyota's use of the word Rumion is not new, and it has been revived for its portfolio of Suzuki-based automobiles. Toyota Glanza and Starlet, both of which are based on the Suzuki Baleno, and the upcoming Toyota Belta, which is based on the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, are other cars that use resurrected Toyota model names.

Returning to the new Rumion, the MPV is simply a rebadged Ertiga, which is already popular in many places. The current-generation Ertiga was introduced in Indonesia in April 2018 and went on sale in India later that year. The vehicle is scheduled for a mid-cycle upgrade next year. This engine produces 105 horsepower and 138 Newton-meters of torque and is connected to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. It has an eight-seater three-row interior, just as the Ertiga.

The Rumion is almost similar to the Ertiga, but for the Toyota logo.

This would suggest that there would be no mechanical changes and that it would employ the same 1.5-litre petrol engine used in all Ertigas worldwide. This engine generates 105 horsepower and 138 Newton-meters of torque and is mated to a five-speed manual or a four-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The Ertiga, like the Ertiga,

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is built in both India and Indonesia, two countries where MPVs are popular. The car displayed in South Africa looks to be a made-in-India version, which is consistent with our earlier this year article regarding Toyota supplying made-in-India Suzuki items to South Africa, including the rebadged Ertiga MPV.

Toyota Rumion: Will It Be Sold in India?

Toyota is expected to sell the Ciaz-based Belta sedan in India first, as a replacement for the now-defunct Yaris. The RumionMPV, which is based on the Ertiga, might eventually find its way to Toyota's Indian dealerships.
